Learning Lab Specialist

BACKGROUND

Carmen Schools of Science and Technology (Carmen) is the largest public charter school network in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a mission to graduate all students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life. Carmen Schools currently operates five campuses, each one as an independent charter school authorized by Milwaukee Public Schools or UW-Milwaukee.

POSITION SUMMARY

In order for that mission to be fulfilled students must make meaningful progress towards graduation, and when they stumble, we are there to provide support. The Learning Lab Specialist is a role designed to provide Carmen Middle School students with opportunities to independently engage in grade-level work in a supportive environment. The Learning Lab Specialist is charged with coaching students to successful completion of math and ELA online programs through weekly check-ins, biweekly family communication, and establishing classroom procedures & routines that support student self-directed focus.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Absolute belief in the ability of all students to learn and achieve and commitment to ending educational inequity in Milwaukee.
2. Associate’s Degree required
3. Previous coaching experience of any kind highly desirable
4. Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
5. Ability to work comfortably with online platforms after technical training.
6. Ability to communicate effectively in written or verbal forms.
7. Ability to perform duties in a positive, professional manner

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Greet students as they enter the classroom.
2. Follow daily routines that support focus and independent work.
3. Take accurate attendance within the first 10 minutes of class.
4. Update attendance as necessary.
5. Call families bi-weekly to provide progress updates or share concerns & praise around student performance.
6. Actively monitor and encourage student engagement through movement around the room and through data usage within the online platform.
7. Support students to troubleshoot technical issues as they arise.
8. Connect students to teachers to support specific learning challenges.
9. Motivate students through sharing weekly progress updates and holding them accountable to engaging in quality work.
10. Update gradebook weekly with student progress.
11. Facilitate small group sessions with students to support individual learning.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position will work predominantly Monday – Friday during school hours; however, this position may require work on occasional evenings as necessary.
